Who the course is for

Residents aged 19+ in South Tyneside who do not hold a qualification in English up to a Level 2.

 

What you will study

Functional Skills in English provide learners with the essential knowledge, skills and understanding that will allow them to operate confidently, effectively and independently in everyday life and in the workplace.

They support learners and help with progression into employment and further study.  

The course will cover:

  • Speaking, listening and communicating 

  • Reading 

  • Writing 

  • Writing composition 

What are the entry requirements?

There are no formal entry requirements for learners undertaking these qualifications. PRS will undertake initial assessment activities with learners to ensure that the chosen qualification is appropriate and that learners can achieve the level they will be studying before enrolling them onto a programme of learning.

Progression and careers

Learners can progress onto the next level of English with the training provider. 

These higher-level courses in English will enable learners to Listen, understand, and respond to verbal communication in a range of familiar contexts. Learners will acquire an understanding of everyday words and their uses and effects and apply this understanding in different context. Read with accuracy different texts encountered in everyday life and work and develop confidence to read more widely and to make comparisons between texts on similar themes, justifying their answers with extracts from the text. 

Read more complex texts and documents with clarity and effectiveness, and demonstrate a sound grasp of spelling, punctuation. Write articles, reports, speeches and more detailed documents that will help prepare for the world of work.
