Who is this course for? (eligibility and personal characteristics)This course is for ages 19 or over, with an interest in a career in construction.
What will I study? (Key modules or content)

On successful completion, learners will gain a City and Guilds Level 1 Certificate in Construction Skills qualification. 

Our construction skills course consists of: 

  • Introduction to health and safety in construction 

  • Introduction to the construction industry

3 Optional units selected from the below list: 

  • Laying block paving  

  • Laying paving using slabs 

  • Mixing and using concrete 

  • Bricklaying 

  • Painting and wallpapering 

  • Painting a panel door 

  • Constructing halving joints 

We support learners with ICT and employability skills. 

All learners will be supported after course completion to complete their CITB Health, safety and environment test and obtain their CSCS Green Labourer's Card. 

What are the entry requirements?

Learners must be aged 19 years old or over and unemployed in receipt of a state benefit e.g., JSA; ESA (WRAG); Universal Credit or other State Benefit. 

Learners must be resident within a South Tyneside postcode area or the surrounding postcode areas e.g., Gateshead, Newcastle upon Tyne, Sunderland. 

Learners must be willing to travel to our construction training centre in Bensham, Gateshead, NE8 2XN for the practical training aspects of the course. 

Learners must be resident within the UK/EAA for at least 3 years prior to starting the course. 

Ideally learners will have a minimum initial assessment score in English and maths of Entry Level 3. 

Requirements of the course (personal protective equipment, tools, materials)

Personal Protective Equipment and all tools are supplied on the course for the practical aspects of the training. 

Progression and Careers

You could progress to employment within the construction sector or gain an apprenticeship.
